Nate Berkus Shares The One Thing You Should Do Each Morning To Keep A Tidy Space

Nate Berkus is known for his interior design talent and home renovation projects with husband Jeremiah Brent, but one of the HGTV star's biggest tips is surprisingly basic. In a video shared to his Instagram account, Berkus shared his favorite nighttime ritual — which actually begins when he wakes up each day. The home renovation expert starts things off with dinner, followed by a couple of hours of TV. It all leads up to that special, relaxing moment of climbing into bed to read two chapters of whatever book is resting on his nightstand.

Berkus then told his followers that he makes his bed each morning with fresh sheets in preparation for a quality slumber later that night. "Crisp white sheets," he confirmed. "I make the bed every morning just so I can have that moment of climbing back into crisp white sheets." In the caption, the HGTV star noted, "It's a habit I highly recommend! That way, come bedtime, you're always climbing into a well-made bed, perfect to then unwind with a good book before you go to sleep." Berkus recommended sheets from his Nate Home line.

How Nate Berkus crafts a picture-perfect bed

Nate Berkus doesn't just make his bed either — he styles it. In March 2023, the "Nate and Jeremiah Home Project" star posted an Instagram video in which he shared pro tips on how to make your bed look as though it's been crafted for a magazine spread. As it turns out, it's more about "assembling" a bed than just making it in the usual manner.

Berkus suggests using four, regular-size pillows with plain cases paired with two decorative pillows. He then folds the top sheet on the bed down to create a neat cuff. The finishing touch is a throw for a more eye-catching look. "If you want your bed to look really beautiful and finished, then putting a throw at the end of the bed, folding it over, having this texture, I think it's really beautiful," he explained.

As such, this isn't a design mistake Berkus wants you to avoid. The HGTV fan favorite shared similar tips when he made a bed from start to finish on "Today with Hoda & Jenna." The in-demand designer also showed viewers how to make hospital corners when dressing a bed, and he added a buttery soft comforter to complete the look. Take a look inside Berkus and Jeremiah Brent's stunning home and you're sure to notice the impeccably-made beds.

He thinks a bedroom should be like a sanctuary

Considering he starts his day thinking about his nighttime ritual, it's no surprise that Nate Berkus has some strong feelings about what a bedroom should be. There's one house feature Berkus and his husband, Jeremiah Brent, can't agree on but when it comes to the design of their shared bedroom they're clearly on the same page. "I firmly believe your bedroom should be your sanctuary and retreat," Berkus informed fans on Facebook

The home renovation expert added that his two biggest bedroom design rules are to "stick to muted tones and clean up the clutter" to provide a calming atmosphere. Berkus typically sticks to the three Cs: Calm, comfort, and (lack of) clutter. In an interview with Homes & Gardens, he noted that when creating a bedroom sanctuary, "The focus should be on what is calming, what is joyful to you," so you can go to sleep and rise well.

Berkus also likes to use a lot of different textures and sheens in his bedroom design. But he draws the line at too much bedding, perhaps due to horrifying memories of his interior designer mother's French country design style. "I remember in my bedroom as a kid I had to take off 15 pillows before I could go to sleep," he admitted to In Kansas City, arguing, "For me at least, less is a bit more when it comes to making the bed."
